September 24th, 2012. Day +563.   2 comments

We had a wonderful time yesterday at the Madison Walk & Run for Wishes.  Hundreds of people showed up on what started out as a chilly morning.  I think there were at least a dozen previous wish kids in attendance and there were over 45 different teams of walkers and runners!

Charlotte with John and Linda, her Wish Granters from Make A Wish!!

The sun was out early and started warming everyone up as we started walking.  Before I was able to talk to all of our team members, the walk was over!

Charlotte’s Angels ended up with 37 walkers and runners, and the team picture was able to capture most of them.  There were a couple of late arrivals, but they are forgiven as a few of them were terrific nurses from our days on P4!!!

All told, we raised over $4200!!!

We were privileged enough to receive a plaque for raising the most money and another for having the biggest “Wish Team”.  But the best gift we received yesterday was the letter letting us know that Charlotte’s Angels will be sponsoring 6 year old Alyssa’s Wish Trip to Disney World!!!  How wonderful is that?  We are so happy and thankful for all of you who donated to Charlotte’s team and walked with us.  It is a wish come true for Amy and me to be able to say we did something special for a deserving child!

Amy and I wanted to ask you all for some prayers.  Joan Sennhenn, Grandma Elske’s very good friend, lost her husband Bob on Thursday to cancer.  He was 66 years old.  He will be greatly missed and we ask that you keep Joan and her family in your prayers during this difficult time.

as if that wasn’t enough

Kate, the spunky 13 year old from Rockford with AML, who we told you about in October (see post here), has relapsed-11 months out of her transplant.  She now faces an even more aggressive treatment protocol, and it goes without saying that Kate, and her family, is scared.  As her parents put it, “So, that’s what it is like to have a kid with cancer. The treatment is as dangerous as the disease.”  Please consider leaving a note of support on her caringbridge site.

We would also like to remind you that Sunday is the Madison area Walk for Wishes fundraiser walk.  Saturday is the final day you can sign up online to become a walker.   We are currently in the lead for fundraising, but we have heard that the Lancaster team has the Angels in their sights!  So if you haven’t already done so, please consider donating to our team.

Thank you all again for checking in on us.

September 13th, 2012. Day +552   4 comments

Charlotte had her three month oncology appointment today.  We met with Dr Diamond again who said CJ is looking really good.  Dr Diamond was thrilled to hear that Charlotte was not using her nuk anymore and she loves to hear that she is having fun in school.  She is impressed to hear that Charlotte and Molly are getting along nicely and can’t believe how much she is growing.  Charlotte’s CBC numbers were “perfect, perfect”.  WBC 4.3, Hemoglobin 12.4, Platelets 245k and 1400 Neutrophils.  When Molly wanted to get examined on the table as well, Charlotte set her straight.  She said “No Molly, you can’t do it.  I’m the one who got the poke”.  It was a great appointment.
We then made a stop on the 4th floor to visit some nurses.  Charlotte got to see her two favorite nurses of all time-Katy and Tracy!  She even got to see Natasha who is probably right up there on her list.  All of them were so happy to see how well she is doing.  And they were all so surprised to see how big Molly is getting!  It was a very nice visit, but we couldn’t stay long…

Charlotte was invited to be one of the Wish children to help with the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Grand Opening of the new Madison area Make-A-Wish office!!  We left the hospital and arrived downtown for the festivities. Charlotte even got up and talked into the microphone (both Charlotte and Daddy were on Channel 3 news at 6pm tonight!) about her Wish Trip to all of the people attending!  It was a terrific time and all for a great cause!  We are so excited to have such a wonderful organization have an office so close.  We will be seeing many of them again in a week and a half at the Walk for Wishes and Amy is already looking for ways to volunteer.  We are so overwhelmed with all of the wonderful support for our team (Charlotte’s Angels).  We have 30 walkers on our team and have surpassed our $2500 goal.  But because this is for a phenomenal cause, we will keep asking for more.  Don’t forget to sign up if you haven’t already!

September 11th, 2012. Day +550.   6 comments

Here we are.  Another September 11th gone by.  Today marks the 2 year anniversary of Charlotte’s AML diagnosis.  It is also 18 months after her transplant.  What an interesting and terrific two years we have had!

Here are a few reminder pictures of where we were two years ago, and last year…

I know you have seen this one more than a few times.  But it really is one of the few pictures we have from that day.  And it’s just a good picture to remind ourselves of where we were when this whole journey started.  This was taken when CJ was recovering from her bone marrow biopsy and her port-a-cath installation surgery.

This was last year when we took CJ and Molly on a picnic, she was still on isolation from her BMT.

And today we have Charlotte, celebrating like any regular kid would, by going to Ella’s Deli and riding the carousel!!

Amy and I would never be where we are without the help and prayers from all of you.  We have been truly blessed.  We will never be able to thank you all enough.

Don’t forget to sign up to walk or donate for the Madison area Make-A-Wish walk on September 23rd.  We are close to our goal of raising $2500, which will allow Charlotte’s Angels to sponsor a wish for another deserving child!

September 4th, 2012. Day +543 Charlotte’s first day of school!!   4 comments

The title of this post says it all.  How can I describe the feelings that Amy and I felt this morning when we dropped Charlotte off at her 4K class today?  There were tears.  Tears of joy.  Tears of relief.  Tears of hope.  So many tears, so few cheeks.

Charlotte getting ready to leave for school!

I know that a lot of parents in every city were having emotional moments this morning-and I am not trying to take anything away from their day.  But for Amy and me,  today was a dream come true.   This was one of the days we always prayed Charlotte would be around to see.  She was such a brave girl this morning, and she seemed to love going to school.  Amy and Grandma picked her up and she was all smiles and loved talking about her day.  Let’s hope that enthusiasm continues!  We couldn’t have been more proud.  We are so thankful for our many blessings.

Charlotte putting her name tag in her pocket-one of the ways they take roll call.

As many of you might already be aware, September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.   Here are some scary facts.

Each year in the US almost 13,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer.

Of those, 1 in 5 won’t survive.

Please consider joining, or donating to, our Make A Wish Walk for Wishes Team-Charlotte’s Angels.  Amy and I can tell you firsthand, the monies raised are going to a wonderful cause for some very deserving children.
